The main aim is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge on analytical methods for materials of natural and anthropogenic origin, with a particular focus on liquid and gas phases. Lab analysis of samples collected during fieldtrips will be carried out. Practice will be implemented by theory, aimed to provide information for the meaning and the correct use of the analytical data in relation with its nature and the aims of the geochemical investigations.
Power point presentations. Scientific papers published by international journals.
Learning Objectives
Theoretical knowledge on the main analytical methods used in geochemical laboratories. Practice (direct use) on analytical instruments. Evaluation of analytical data and applications.
Prerequisites
no
Teaching Methods
Power point presentations. Fieldtrips (Aeolian Islands, Mt. Amiata).
Further information
6CFU Attending the course is not mandatory but highly recommended.
Type of Assessment
Oral exam: the student should answer to several questions related to the main topics of the course. The critical capability of the course topics will be evaluated.
Course program
The course provides basic concepts of geochemical processes regulating the chemical and isotopic composition of fluids from natural (volcanoes, geothermal systems, thermal areas) and anthropogenic environments. The main potential primary sources of fluids are investigated, as well as the effects on their chemistry of secondary processes. The course will take into account the behaviour of environmental tracers for themes concerning 1) contamination of air and natural waters, 2) the use of geochemical parameters for geothermal prospection and volcano monitoring, 3) geochemical-biological processes controlling geochemical features of volcanic lakes.
Several examples (key studies) from volcanic and urbanized areas will be shown.
